The reluctant and heavy heart
The simple truth is that Obama should stay on vacation for another week. His poll numbers will shoot up dramatically. The thing is, McCain has absolutely nothing without demonizing Obama. He can't offer any huge brilliant ideas because he really doesn't have any. He's not generating any enthusiasm among his supporters. And yet the race is neck and neck because the usual readymade off-the-rack "My opponent (insert name of Democrat here) is a raging liberal who will raise your taxes and San Francisco and France."

It works remarkably well, particularly on the raw cookie dough that is the Uninformed Conservative Brain. Anybody who, at this point, thinks that Obama is a Muslim. There is no candy-coating it. They are idiots.

But everybody's sick to death of this thing already and we haven't even hit the conventions yet. It's all silliness at this point. And I could give a crap about the Religious Forum thing that happened over the weekend (Obama was never gonna come out of that thing on top, even if John McCain showed up blind drunk with his pants around his knees). And, apparently, there is some controversy over whether or not John McCain "cheated" at this event by not being in his sound-proof booth before coming out and playing Family Feud. I could give a shit.

I agree with this guy:
But the fact that McCain may have had a slight advantage isn't what caught my eye. What did was how sanctimonious his campaign got when asked about the situation by the press. Here's the New York Times:

Nicolle Wallace, a spokeswoman for Mr. McCain, said on Sunday night that Mr. McCain had not heard the broadcast of the event while in his motorcade and heard none of the questions.

"The insinuation from the Obama campaign that John McCain, a former prisoner of war, cheated is outrageous," Ms. Wallace said.

That's pretty bold, isn't it? The assumption is that McCain is above question in this, and basically every, situation because he is a former prisoner of war.

Look, I respect John McCain's experience in Vietnam. Don't assume otherwise because I'm a DFH blogger. But this sort of thing happens all the time. McCain always insists that he doesn't like talking about his POW experience ("One of the things I've never tried to do is exploit my Vietnam service to my country because it would be totally inappropriate to do," he once said), and the mainstream media always buys it. But in actuality McCain has made his war service the centerpiece of many of his advertisements and videos, and he discusses it regularly.

For example, when Obama criticized McCain for not supporting the more generous version of the GI Bill that recently passed Congress, McCain responded, "I will not accept from Senator Obama, who did not feel it was his responsibility to serve our country in uniform, any lectures on my regard for those who did."

I had the same reaction, and I've been seeing more and more of this (most hilariously, last week when Sean Hannity used McCain's time in a POW camp as an excuse for him cheating on his crippled first wife, a good seven years after he'd returned from Vietnam). And I hope that somebody asks him about it, hopefully somewhere public where the cameras can show McCain completely lose it and turn into the terrible asshole he's rumored to be behind closed doors. Personally, it makes me sick and it's such a crybaby pussy move. "McCain's budget doesn't make any sense, and will actually spiral the US further into debt." "YOU DARE QUESTION A FORMER PRISONER OF WARR?????"

This won't get us anywhere, and it showed itself last week with McCain dancing solo on the whole Georgia/Russia thing. Threatening Russia (while we have no military whatsoever to do anything) is a really dumb idea, dumber than even Bush. It's a sad day when George W. Bush makes you look like an undiplomatic idiot.

Anyway, since Jon Stewart is our country's most respected newsman, I hope he can get on the case with this dumb Military Service thing. The Reluctant Warrior John McCain cannot stop talking about how he doesn't like talking about his POW camp experience, or working it into every other sentence, which it pains him to do, but he'll do it anyway, if only to tell you that he doesn't like to do it. Maybe Giuliani can teach him the subtleties of working in little nuggets like that ("Well, as the mayor during the 9/11 attacks, I can tell you that the shrimp scampi is excellent here.")

I hate to tell a former prisoner of war to shut the fuck up, but I find myself doing it more and more often, because that (HOW DARE YOU QUESTION HIM?!?!?!) drives me CRAZY NUTS.

I guess what's really frustrating is that I used to like the guy. I know that politics is pretty much nothing but disappointment (unless you're into dudes like Kucinich or Feingold who don't have a sell-out bone in their bodies), but both McCain and Obama have really let me down so far. Obama less so, because I was prepared for the vaunted Move to the Center whenever it came, but McCain taking on Bush's ad people really turned the tide for me. I thought he was above this petty shit, but he's just another asshole politician like all the rest of them. I was looking forward to an election cycle where the Super Far Right felt left out of the dance entirely, and they were rendered politically irrelevant, and well ha haha ha McCain "What did I say about Jerry Falwell? I meant that I love him eternally!"

Eh, I never liked the guy, he was a nonentity for me, and his personal mistakes have rendered him pretty much unlikeable for me. It may not be the best political position to judge people on their private lives, but someone who treats the people close to him the way he does is not someone I want as the leader of my nation.

Yeah - to be honest I hadn't heard about his personal life stuff until recently (which, holy christ, is just terrible). But, as a Texan who knew firsthand what a disaster Bush was, I was really excited about the prospect of him taking an upset in the 2000 GOP primaries, and I liked the way he handled himself in the immediate aftermath.

Then again, maybe my political crush was just a result of not paying attention. I just read this (about McCain's immediate response to 9/11) and it was a real eye opener.

McCain told a friendly convention of the Veterans of Foreign Wars that Obama's positions have changed as his political ambitions grew.

****************************************

He also said Obama has refused to change his positions to reflect new success.

Not a slam dunk, but still a little dumb.

Yeah, that's pretty much right on for how McCain's doing this whole campaign. I feel almost like he's running a good old fashioned whistle-stop campaign like, say, from the 1800's. He's just saying any old damn thing anywhere he goes, knowing full well that there's no "tele-vision" that'll show him contradicting himself. I mean, at that same meeting, he took credit for a GI Bill that he opposed, that the VFW kicked him in the ass for opposing. It's kind of amazing to watch. It's like how he said, on camera, that he didn't know anything about the economy. And then, later, when reporters started asking him about it he just straight up denied saying it. Nevermind that it's on tape that he said it. Just...hey look over there! Muslims and tire gauges!

If you think the attacks are stupid now, just wait until the debates start. McCains camp KNOW he can't talk on this issues or, you know...IN FRONT OF A CROWD. So the only prayer they have while Obama is trouncing him in the debates is going to be to repeat horrible awful things on TV while the debate season is in full swing. I bet you the start quoting that stupid book as a viable source too.

Also, I forget which reporter it was, but they made a great point of information, that most of the foot notes in that book, the author cites HIMSELF as the fucking source to verify the info.
Lame.

I really hope that Obama picks Biden for veep. I really can't think of one person McCain can pick that can stand toe to toe with Biden in a debate format. Who? Tom Ridge? Bobby Jindel?!?!?

Yeah! But bloody cookie dough ice cream to make it look more like brains. Cherries.

It'd never be as good as the Steve Colbert Americone Dream, because that's pretty much Heaven churned with rock salt, but it'd make this Liberal Zombie pretty happy.

Cafferty is the shit. I always feel like he's pirating the airwaves whenever he says anything on The Situation Room. Like, all this bullshit, and then here comes Jack Cafferty saying common sense things like, "Why are these millionaires calling each other elitist?" "If all of these candidates have been in Washington for three decades, how can they promise change?" And so on.

But damn, even for Cafferty that was some high-grade ass whoop.

not having cable, my only contact with CNN is the Situation Room on mute at the gym, and yesterday the text was all, "our ALLY in the WAR ON TERROR is gone! oh no!"
I don't think the closed captioning can keep up with Cafferty when he appears...
